Care & Materials

Made by nature, so no two are alike.

Every piece we make starts as a reclaimed fish skin or a natural hide. That is what makes each one unique, and it is also why your piece will never look exactly like the photos. Here is what to expect, and how to keep it looking its best for years.

Natural variation

What makes your piece one of a kind.

Pattern & texture

Fish skin keeps the scale pattern of the fish it came from, and every hide carries its own grain, markings and texture. Small marks and irregularities are signs of a real, natural material, not defects.

Color

Natural materials take color unevenly, so shades vary from piece to piece and from the photos. Screens and lighting can also change how colors look online.

Size & shape

Each piece is cut by hand from an individual skin or hide, so measurements may vary slightly from those listed.

Over time

Natural leathers develop character with use. Color may deepen or soften, and the surface will take on a patina that is yours alone.

Caring for your piece

A little care goes a long way.

Keep it dry

Avoid soaking your piece. If it gets wet, blot it gently and let it air-dry at room temperature, away from direct heat.

Clean gently

Wipe with a soft, dry or barely damp cloth. Never machine wash, and avoid harsh cleaners or solvents.

Condition occasionally

A small amount of natural leather balm every few months keeps the material supple.

Store with care

Keep pieces out of direct sunlight and away from heat, and store them in a breathable bag rather than plastic.

Hair-on hides

For hides with fur, brush gently in the direction of the hair and keep them dry.
